TG465 5G Edge Data Collection
IEC 61850 gateway is now essential for modern power substations. Utilities moving from legacy serial protocols to IEC 61850 face a common challenge: how to connect new IEDs with existing Modbus and IEC 104 equipment – and then send that data to the cloud for analytics. Bivocom TG465 solves this as a rugged, programmable 5G edge gateway, delivering MMS client/server, protocol conversion, and secure cloud upload in one device.

What Is IEC 61850 & Why It Matters
IEC 61850 is the international standard for communication networks and systems in substations. Unlike older protocols that rely on register maps or point tables, IEC 61850 uses an object-oriented data model: physical device → logical device → logical node → data object → data attribute. Specifically, it uses a three-level and two-bus architecture: station level, bay level, process level, plus station bus and process bus. It sets unified rules for data modeling, device interaction and real-time transmission. Three services make IEC 61850 powerful:
- MMS (Manufacturing Message Specification): Used for monitoring, control, and configuration between station-level clients and bay-level IEDs.
- GOOSE (Generic Object Oriented Substation Event): A fast, publisher-subscriber mechanism for critical signals like tripping and interlocking (<4ms latency).
- SV (Sampled Values): Streams of synchronized current and voltage samples from merging units to protection relays.
But adopting IEC 61850 does not mean you must discard existing Modbus or IEC 104 devices. That is exactly where an IEC 61850 gateway like the Bivocom TG465 adds value.

Why Choose TG465 for IEC 61850 Gateway?
The TG465 delivers all the functions of an IEC 61850 gateway – MMS client, MMS server, protocol translation, and cloud upload – in one rugged, programmable device. But what makes it the right choice for utilities and system integrators?
Reduce engineering cost and time.
Traditional integration often takes months of protocol development or expensive middleware. With the TG465, you complete configuration in hours or days. The web-based rules engine and SCL file import eliminate manual point mapping, so your team focuses on outcomes, not low-level coding.
Protect your legacy investment.
You have hundreds of Modbus or IEC 104 devices still in good condition. Do not scrap them. The TG465 acts as a bidirectional protocol converter, making legacy equipment appear as IEC 61850 compliant IEDs to the rest of the system. This extends the life of existing assets while you modernize step by step.
Edge computing power at your fingertips.
The quad-core ARM CPU and optional NPU (up to 1 TOPS) let you run local logic, alarms, and even AI inference directly on the gateway. For example, you can detect abnormal temperature trends on a transformer and send a warning before a failure occurs – all at the edge, without depending on the cloud.
Industrial reliability you can trust.
Substations are harsh environments. The TG465 operates from -35°C to +75°C, resists 15kV ESD, and supports dual SIM, hardware watchdog, and redundant power input (560 VDC). No fans, no moving parts. It is built to stay online for years.
Future ready connectivity.
With 5G cellular, optional WiFi 6, and Gigabit Ethernet, the gateway handles today’s data loads and tomorrow’s higher bandwidth. You can also run Docker containers to add new features without firmware upgrades, keeping your substation agile as standards evolve.
Getting Started with TG465 for IEC 61850
Deploying your IEC 61850 Substation Gateway (TG465) is straightforward. The following steps outline the logical workflow. For a detailed walkthrough, watch our stepbystep video on YouTube. The web interface is intuitive, and you do not need to write any protocol code.To deploy your IEC 61850 gateway solution, follow these simple steps:
- Contact support: Request the special firmware that includes IEC 61850 MMS client/server and the desired protocol conversion packages (Modbus, IEC 104, etc.).
- Set up your TG465: Connect antennas, SIM card (if using cellular), Ethernet to your substation network, and serial cables to legacy devices.
- Upload the firmware: Use the web interface (LAN IP, default credentials admin/admin).
- Configure MMS client: Enter the IP and port of your IED or simulator. Import the ICD file if needed.
- Add data rules: For each data attribute, specify the path, data type, and Functional Constraint. Test with the data query page.
- Set up protocol conversion: Enable Modbus or IEC 104 interfaces, add corresponding rules.
- Configure cloud upload: Enter your MQTT broker address and credentials, or select HTTP/TCP.
- Enable MMS server (optional): Turn on the builtin server so upstream SCADA can read the gateway directly.
- Monitor and validate: Use the builtin sniffer and data query page to confirm communication.
