Bivocom Achieves EN 18031 Certification

Industrial IoT Devices Meet EU RED

September 30, 2025 — Bivocom, a leading provider of industrial IoT and M2M connectivity solutions, today announced its successful attainment of the EN 18031 certification for its TG451 Gateway, TR341, and TR321 Routers. This milestone means Bivocom’s rugged connectivity solutions now fully comply with the European Union’s Radio Equipment Directive (RED)—the region’s mandatory framework for radio equipment safety. For businesses relying on IoT to power critical operations, this certification ensures protection against cyber threats, data breaches, and regulatory penalties.

Why EN 18031 Matters for Industrial IoT

For industrial IoT users, security and compliance are non-negotiable. As the EU’s latest mandatory standard for radio equipment, EN 18031 addresses three critical pain points that disrupt operations worldwide:

  • (EN 18031-1) Network Protection : This feature shields devices from cyberattacks like DDoS or man-in-the-middle exploits. For factories or remote energy sites, in particular, this is vital.
  • (EN 18031-2) Data Privacy : It encrypts sensitive industrial data (e.g., production metrics, asset location) end-to-end. This keeps confidential operational information secure throughout every stage of transmission.
  • (EN 18031-3) Anti-Fraud : This function prevents tampering with firmware or data logs. For logistics or utilities, for instance, it ensures asset tracking integrity and grid data security.

From August 15, 2025, non-EN 18031-certified radio equipment will be banned from the EU market. Bivocom’s early certification gives clients a critical head start, avoiding costly delays or fines tied to last-minute compliance overhauls.

Certified Devices

Bivocom’s EN 18031-certified products combine industrial-grade reliability with compliance to the EU’s RED. All three models share foundational features to meet both harsh industrial demands and EN 18031 standards, including an operating temperature range of -35°C to +75°C, IP30 ingress protection, end-to-end data privacy via MQTT/Modbus TCP encryption, and secure VPN tunnels (IPsec/PPTP/L2TP/GRE/OpenVPN) for network security. Beyond these shared traits, each device has unique strengths tailored to distinct industrial use cases.

TG451 Industrial Gateway

Engineered for high-speed data transmission and multi-device connectivity, ideal for EU applications requiring integration of diverse sensors and controllers.

  • High-Bandwidth Connectivity: Supports optional LTE CAT 4/CAT 6 for fast data transfer, plus dual SIM/dual module (optional) for WWAN/WAN failover—minimizing downtime in critical setups like water pump stations or power substations.
  • Rich Expandable Interfaces: Includes 5-RJ45 (10/100M), 1 RS232, 1 RS485, 2 DI/2 DO, 2 Relay, 1 USB 2.0, and optional SD card slot (up to 32GB)—enabling connection to serial/Ethernet sensors and remote control of field devices.
  • Programmable Flexibility: Offers optional C/C++, Python, LUA programming for custom workflows, suiting smart traffic or vehicle WiFi systems that need tailored data processing.

It is widely applied across industrial and infrastructure scenarios, from food processing plant PLC control and water pump station monitoring to power substation data transmission, as well as mobile and traffic-related setups like vehicle WiFi and traffic light systems, while also adapting to harsh environments such as air compressor management and mining area safety monitoring.

 TR321 Industrial Cellular Router

A compact, cost-effective solution for use cases where space and low-bandwidth efficiency are priorities.

  • Low-Bandwidth Compatibility: Supports 4G, plus optional LTE CAT M1/NB-IoT—perfect for low-data applications like digital signage, ATMs, or small-scale IP camera deployments.
  • Space-Saving Design: Lightweight (320g) and compact (100×100×23mm) with flexible mounting (wall or optional DIN Rail), easily fitting into tight enclosures like kiosks or smart grid switchgear.
  • Simplified Deployment: Features 2-RJ45 (10/100M), 1 RS232, and 1 RS485, paired with OpenWRT-based OS (optional programming via C/C++, Python, LUA) for easy integration into existing systems.

Thanks to its compact size and cost-effectiveness, it is widely used in small-to-medium industrial setups. These include air compressor remote monitoring, electric vehicle charging piles, and smart traffic signal signs. It also serves smart factory equipment, HVAC systems, parking lot payment terminals, and energy-related applications like solar energy and electricity meter data collection.

TR341 Industrial Cellular Router

Designed for multi-device network deployment and asset monitoring, ideal for industrial use cases requiring centralized connectivity and reliable service.
  • Multi-Device Support: Equips 4-RJ45 (10/100M), 1 RS232, and 1 RS485 to connect multiple endpoints—ideal for ATMs, fleet management systems, or public transportation networks needing centralized connectivity.
  • Enhanced WiFi Security: Includes RADIUS WiFi authentication to control network access, preventing unauthorized use in public-facing setups like transit hubs.
  • Asset Tracking Capability: Offers optional built-in GPS/GNSS for real-time location monitoring of mobile assets (e.g., delivery fleets), plus optional dual SIM for failover to ensure uninterrupted service

It supports broad cross-sector applications, from smart traffic signal signs and light network management to agricultural IoT device connectivity and shared bicycle tracking. Additionally, it meets the needs of water pump remote control, base station monitoring, and VMS data transmission in public infrastructure.

What This Means for Bivocom Clients

For global industrial clients, Bivocom’s certification translates into three clear advantages:

  1. Global Market Access: EN 18031 is no longer just a European standard; it has become a global benchmark. For example, the UK, Singapore, and Canada have adopted its requirements into their IoT safety frameworks. Meanwhile, emerging markets like India and Brazil reference it in new telecom rules.
  2. Reduced Risk: Built‑in security controls reduce the risk of cyber incidents that cause unplanned downtime, data theft, or operational disruption.
  3. Future-Proofing: Bivocom’s compliance with global standards ensures devices work as regulations change.

“Achieving this certification is not merely about compliance. It’s a testament to our commitment to security and reliability,” said Ian Zeng, VP of Sales & Marketing. “We empower our partners to deploy their IoT solutions with greater confidence and fewer regulatory hurdles.”
